    Boating in Rhode Island

The Ocean State may be a small state, but it has a huge boating community and is a summer hot spot in the northeast for boaters from around New England, as well as those that travel up from Florida and the Caribbean.

Rhode Island is home to Newport, which is often referred to as the Sailing Capital of the World, as well as many other popular boating destinations, including beautiful Block Island. You'll find modest fishing boats trolling near some of the world's largest megayachts in the state's waters, which include Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island Sound and, of course, the Atlantic Ocean. Visit our Rhode Island online maps and charts to get a closer look at what the Ocean State has to offer boaters.

    Rhode Island Boating Regulations

It is mandatory for the following boaters to be certified in order to operate vessels on the waters of Rhode Island.

    1. Anyone born after January 1, 1986, who operates a vessel with a motor that exceeds 10-horse power.
    2. Anyone who operates a personal watercraft (jet ski) regardless of age.
Refer to Rhode Island's Boating Safety Site for education requirements specific to this state.
